worldwide. Now, Cornell sheets are also available in shops but you can draw it
as well by using pencil and scale.
1. First draw a vertical line down the left
side of each page two and half inches from the edge of the paper; end the line
two inches from the bottom of the sheet. This creates a cue column.
2. Next draw a horizontal line two inches up
from the bottom of the paper. This is border for summary area.
3. The large space to the right of the cue
column and above the summary area is where your notes should be taken.

Step 1 : Include
a Cue Column
It is basically a two and half inch margin
on the left hand side of each page of your notes sheet. It will help you to
make good use your notes until test time. While taking notes, keep the cue
column empty. While revising your notes, make the questions from the ideas and
write them in the cue column. These questions will help you to clarify meanings
and reveal relationship. These will establish continuity and strengthen memory.
Step 2 : Leave
Room for Summaries
The two inch
space at the bottom of the page is for summary area. At this portion you have
to sum up your notes in one or two sentences. The summary area will perform two
functions. At one hand, it will provide nutshell version of the topic. Om
another hand it will help you to look at the implications of what you have
written. Sometimes, while focusing on main or individual points, the whole
meaning of the text is lost. The summary area will provide you the facility to
get the overview of the topic or page of the notes.
Step 3 : Create
a Flexible Note Taking Area
The information
which will be written in note taking area may vary from college to. College and
student to student. Different courses have different demands. The format of
Note taking is totally depending on the student’s choice. You can use your
special way for note taking in Cornwall method.. You should not write notes in
outline form, that will be concise,. You can use numbering, alphabetical order
or bullets but over use of them also can make the content little bit confusing.
Steps
of Cornell Method
This method is
more than just a sheet of paper. It will enhance your learning as well. You can
learn using this method in few steps.
First, capture
the ideas and facts in the six inch column.
Second, at your
free time review that ideas to fill the gaps. Do that at the time when lecture
is fresh in your mind.
Third, determine
the main idea and write questions according to it.
Fourth, with a
plain sheet of paper, block out the notes in the six-inch column, leaving
exposed only the question in the cue column. Now glance at the question, then
recite aloud, in your own words, the idea or fact needed to answer the
question. After reciting, slip the plain sheet down to check your recitation.
If your answer was incorrect or incomplete, cover the notes and recite again.
It is important to establish an accurate, crisp, clear image in your memory at
the very beginning.
Fifth, at the
bottom of the sheet, write a summarizing statement—a con cise, in-a-nutshell
version of a page full of notes. These summaries will make studying for exams, especially
the final one, remarkably efficient. Furthermore, by writing summaries, you
will become a better thinker and writer.
Sixth, review
your notes immediately so that you end up with a view of the whole rather than
isolated facts and ideas. In addition to getting a global view, an immediate
review impresses the fresh lecture in your memory.
